Prescription for Panic: CBT (Nevada USA 2013)
October 2, 2013 @ 2:15 pm – 3:45 pm PDT
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA 90 min presentation
In this 90 minute clinical presentation, Dr. Padesky describes each of the essential stages of effective CBT for panic disorder and provides video demonstrations. With characteristic clarity, warmth, and humor, Padesky makes the case for why CBT should usually be the first “prescription for panic.”
Why should CBT usually be the first “prescription for panic”?
- According to American Psychiatric Association practice guidelines, pharmacotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) are both first line recommended treatments for panic disorder
- However, when length of treatment and relapse are considered, CBT has been shown in numerous randomized controlled outcome studies to be superior to pharmacological treatments
- Despite these empirical findings, many psychiatrists and physicians lack the knowledge and skill to either competently deliver CBT for panic disorder or describe it well enough to patients to facilitate a successful referral
